Crochet Market Bag

crochet market bag cotton

A while ago I designed a little crochet shopping bag, the Apricot Stringbag. It is a cute, small bag for carrying small items. Lately I have missed having a market bag to carry normal groceries in. So I designed a free crochet pattern for a market bag.

The bag is constructed like this: The bottom is an oval and the sides are a repeating, lace crochet pattern. I didn’t want the bag to become too lacy like string bags, since some of my groceries might fall out… As you can see from the picture above, the market bag can carry many groceries in it :-)

The bottom is lined with 3 layers of fabric to make the bottom more rigid. Two of the fabrics are quite thick and the outer layer matches the colors of the bag. Lining is optional and one can use the bag without the lining.

Hook 3 mm + 4 mm   US: 2/C + 6/G

Yarn   Muskat by Drops/Garnstudio.  5 skeins in the blue shade marine #13. 50 grams (1.76 ounces), 100 meters (109 yards), 100% mercerized Egyptian cotton. This is a DK weight yarn.

If you want to substitute my yarn choice with another yarn, you can get some advice in my guide How to substitute yarn.

Big Sewing Needle

Size   width:  32 cm / 12½ inches       height: 40 cm / 16 inches

The bag stretches somewhat, when it carries groceries, as the picture above shows.

Optional  Fabric for stabilizing the bottom of the bag and sewing thread in a matching color.

If you are not used to reading crochet charts, please see my How to read Crochet Charts Tutorial. This tutorial will teach you how to crochet with the help of a crochet diagram.

The chart shows you how to do the pattern, if you would crochet back and forth. Since you crochet in the round for this bag the patterns i slightly different at the edges, but else it gives you a perfect picture of the pattern repeat. Sewing the Bottom

On top of the inner bottom oval I sewed 3 layers of fabric. This is optional and it makes the bag more sturdy, when I put groceries in it. I chose 2 thick pieces of fabric, (the colored ones), and a dark blue cotton fabric. The colored fabrics are the exact size of the bottom and the blue fabric has some extra seam allowance (1 cm =1/4 inch).

lining market bag

Cut out the outer fabric piece (blue) and two pieces for lining (pattern).

pinned lining market bag

Pin the fabrics to the inner part of the button. The thick colored fabric on the inside and the thinner, matching blue fabric on top.

lined crochet bag

Sew the fabric layers together very close to the edges. The bag also looks better that way.
