Medici Crochet Mittens

A Free Crochet Mittens Pattern

crochet mittens free pattern

The Medici dynasty was an influential banking and textile trade family during the Italian Renaissance. They were renowned for their wealth and for sponsoring artists like Fra Angelico and Michelangelo. In their coat of arms they had these red balls. No one knows for sure what they represent. Maybe they are pharmaceutical pills, since the name Medici, or they are bitter red oranges, which the Medici family traded with the East.

My red felted beads reminded me of the red, popping Medici pills which I saw all over Florence and hence I called my free crochet pattern Medici Mittens.

Construction

This is a free crochet mittens pattern for fingerless mittens. Start working the cuffs by crocheting single crochets in back loops. This gives a rippled effect to the fabric. Crochet the cuffs together so they make a tube. Continue working in the round to where the thumb hole begins. Crochet back and forth at the thumb hole opening. Work in the round again after the length for the thumb hole is finished. The felted beads are each put between a small pocket. See chart how these pockets are constructed.

If your handsize differs from mine, see the tutorial how you measure the size of your hands for making mittens. You can customize a pair of fingerless mittens from my intructions.

Beads

Make 6 felted beads for the mittens. You can make these in no time, see my tutorial about felting beads.

Place some glue into the small ‘pockets’ you have crocheted for the beads. Place beads on top and wait a couple of hours until the glue is dry. Be generous with the glue, so the beads will stick well. But don’t be too generous, so the glue doesn’t appear at the edges.

 Abbreviations

sc = single crochet

sl st = slip stitch

sc2tog = single crochet 2 together  = insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
