crochet hat lace

Nuuk Hat

I have never been to Greenland before. But I picture someone would need a warm hat in Greenland’s capital Nuuk, when the sled dogs are howling against the cold wind and daylight hours are limited in the winter season.

This is a free crochet pattern for a hat. You start at the lower edge and work up to the top. The lower part has a pretty pattern with front post double crochets in it. The front post double crochets continue until the top of the hat.

It is optional to sew a headband lining into the hat. The lower pattern is slightly lacy, so the lining will better keep your head warm. If you experience any itching from the wool the felt lining will also eliminate that.

Materials

Yarn   I used 100% wool bought at a market – 120g ~ 4,3 ounces. So this yarn doesn’t come from a particular yarn brand and I don’t have information about the length for a 50 g skein. This is a worsted yarn.

Hook   4 mm     US: 5/F

Gauge   15 stitches x 11 rows   =    10 cm x 10 cm  = 2,5 inches x 2,5 inches

Optional – Felt Fabric Use some thin felt fabric for the headband lining. I didn’t use fleece, since it might have made the hat too bulky.

Note

This hat is for a 56 cm – 22 inches headsize. (You could make a smaller/larger hat by omitting/adding a pattern repeat. A pattern repeat is 6 stitches).

The joining slip stitches are not shown on the chart. The chart only shows a part of the pattern and not the whole pattern repeat. The chart shows row 1-31. The 2 last rows are not shown on the chart.

Stitches

Slip stitches, double crochets and front post double crochets.

2 double crochets together = a decrease, where you crochet 2 double crochets together = [Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops]. Repeat 2 times between [ ]. Yarn over, draw through 3 remaining loops on hook.

Front post double crochet:  Yarn over hook. Insert your hook from front to back around the double crochet of the row below. Yarn over and draw the yarn around the post of the stitch. 2 times: Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 loops on the hook.

This pattern is written with US crochet terms. If you are not familiar with these see my chart with US, UK, Danish and German crochet terms.
