Peacock Tea Cozy
This is a free crochet pattern for a felted tea cozy. Recently I bought a small teapot from Marimekko. Usually I am not into Marimekko’s bold retro patterns, but this pot spoke to me and now gives me warmth during chilly fall nights. Again I used Plötulopi yarn from Istex for felting. This yarn is great to felt with, since the yarn is unspun and it results in a fabric where the crochet stitch definition is almost gone after felting. I get it at my LYS, but it can also be imported from Iceland here.

Work the yarn double stranded throughout the whole work.

Repeat 13 times between [ ]. 1 slip stitch in this row’s 3rd beginning chain. (91 double crochets).
Round 8
Chain 3, 91 double crochets across, 1 slip stitch in this row’s 3rd beginning chain.
Round 9 – 16
Crochet as row 8.
Cut yarn and weave in ends.
Put the cozy into the washing machine at 60 Celcius/140 Fahrenheit. The crocheted fabric will felt quite a bit. After felting and while the cozy is still damp use your hands and to bring the cozy into the right shape. I did this by pushing my fists into the cozy, so it gets a nice rounded shape. Leave it for a night and it will be dry. With the scissors cut off all extra fluffy wool.
Embroidery
I found a peacock motif in a book and drew it on a piece of baking paper. Florals or other designs on gift paper will also work. (You can copy a motif, because the baking paper is slightly translucent.) Equipped with the little drawing, I embroidered the peacock with chain stitches.
Button
Sew the button on top of the tea cozy.
Lining
Cut a circle in diameter 22cm – 8½inches.
Measure the circumference of your tea cozy. (For my cozy this gives 63½cm – 25 inches).
Cut a rectangle, that is the circumference of your tea coxy, plus 2½cm – 1 inch = 66cm x 14cm = 26inches x 5½ inches.
Sew the long strip together at the sides. Iron the seams.
Pin the right sides of circle and rectangle together and sew together.
Put the lining into the teacozy and sew to the bottom by hand. Voila! A nice tea cozy to go with the pretty teapot.
Coaster
If you wish, you can make a matching coaster for the pot. Follow the pattern for row 1-7 and felt the same way as tea cozy.

Thank you! I love it!
Will make this for one of my daughters for Christmas 2013. It is beautiful.
Hi Mary,
Be sure to use a yarn that felts well. Also clean the filter of your washing maschine afterwards, since this can cause trouble…
LOVE THIS!!!
Thank you so much for the free pattern!!!
You are welcome, Laura :-)
