free crochet pattern for rug

5 Spirals Rug

Last year I crocheted a bath mat, but I wasn’t really satisfied with the result: I had used a thin yarn and the mat doesn’t stay on the floor as it should.

I searched for a thicker yarn and found the jumbo sized Zpagetti yarn from Hoooked. Zpagetti is a supersized, elastic cotton yarn, that is made from leftovers in the textile industry. The colours vary according to which ones are trendy at the moment. Also the nature of the fabric can vary, because different cotton fabrics are used to make Zpagetti cones. It is a very soft and stretchy yarn and therefore pleasant to work with. Because the yarn is very thick you need an equivalent large hook to crochet with it.

If you are looking for a sustainable and eco friendly project – make a rug from this yarn! You could also try to make it with yarn made from old T-shirts. It is a fast as well as enjoyable project. Usually I hold my hook the pencil way, but this large hook made me hold the hook like a knife many times. It feels a little akward in the beginning with this large hook – I got fantasies about making a rug for the Flintstones…

Material  One cone Zpagetti  from Hoooked, 120 m/ 131 yards in a beige color. Yardage can vary from cone to cone though and I had just enough with one cone. (I am a tight crocheter).

If you are in the UK Hoopla Yarn might be a good yarn substitute.

If you are in the US, you can find equivalent yarn on etsy.com. Search for super bulky cotton yarn or T Shirt yarn and you will find this kind of yarn in many shades.

Hook  12 mm   US: 17

Level  Easy/Beginner

Stitches  Chains, slip stitches, double crochets and magical ring. Picot: Chain 3 and 1 slip stitch in first chain.

Finished size Diameter 56 cm/ 22 inches. You can make the rug bigger by continuing the spiral pattern or crochet a different edging.

Weave in ends by grabbing the yarn with a smaller sized hook.

Please see the below crochet chart for guidance! It will be much easier for you to crochet the rug, when you look at the visual instruction. I only show you the complete rows of row 1 and 2.

You have to follow the written instructions how you crochet the rug as a circle from row 3. I have drawn the first stitches of the rows and then you continue crocheting as indicated in the first stitches.

If you are unfamiliar with reading crochet charts, please see my tutorial how to read crochet charts worked in the round.

Soak the rug in water and put it into a large towel to remove extra water. Pin the rug in proper shape and wait until it is dry. The drying took about 4 days.
