DROPS Crochet Cardigan
Many people frown at DROP’s patterns, because they are free and some of them just don’t look like high street fashion pieces. In the later years DROPS has improved a lot in my opinion. Their main business is knit designs, but with the revival of crochet, they have also improved these designs. Some of their new patterns are actually quite cute.
I have knitted several sweaters and cardigans and I have had my doubt regarding crochet and garments, since the fabric you make is much denser than knitted fabric. I chose a project with a not so small hook, so I could get the piece done :-)
I am really satisfied with the result: The cardigan is very wearable and the color just screams Summer!!! I should have made it in a bigger size if I wanted it to be buttoned. I have 2 leftover skeins and my gauge is slightly too tight and I should have made it with a 4½ mm hook. At least there was enough yarn: I hate being forced to buy extra yarn and end up with skeins in different dye lots…
Pattern A free DROPS pattern, check it out here: 99:18 where it is available in several languages. The instructions for the pattern were clear and easy to follow – at least the Danish one is. The stitch pattern was also easy to memorize. The pattern calls for more buttons and pockets but I prefer the ‘less is more’ style. I changed the pattern for the buttons, since I prefer working with the magic/adjustable ring when crocheting in the round. See Crochet Button Tutorial.
Yarn I used 13 skeins Drops, Muskat in the shade Coral #40. 100 % cotton 1.8 oz (50 g) – 109 yards (100 m). Actually the color is more pink than coral.
Hook 4 mm US: G/6
