Bloody Mary Bag
This is a free pattern for a felted crochet bag. It is made with Plötulopi yarn from Istex. This yarn is great for felting and comes in many colors. The bag is constructed of a front and a back panel, which are sewn together.
Materials
Yarn 2 skeins Istex Plötulopi. For this bag I chose the color #1430 Carmine Red Heather. 100% wool unspun, 100 g/300 m – 328 yards.
Hook 7 mm
Tapestry needle and sewing needle
Sewing thread in red and black
1 Button
1 Snap Button
Finished size
Width 33 cm/13 inches, height 16 cm – 6½ inches.
Free Pattern
The bag is worked with 2 strands of yarn worked together.
Front Panel
The bag is not worked from the top or the bottom. Instead one starts crocheting at the widest point of the bag, which is at the lower mid. From there one crochets up to the top of the panel.
Chain 53
Row 1 Chain 3, 52 dc.
Row 2 Chain 1, 1 sc, 50 dc.
Row 3 Chain 1, 2 sc, 46 dc.
Row 4 Chain 1, 2 sc, 42 dc.
Row 5 Chain 1, 2 sc, 38 dc.
Row 6 Chain 1, 1 sc, 36 dc.
Row 7 Chain 1, 1 sc, 34 dc.
Row 8 Chain 1, 1 sc, 32 dc.
You have now reached the top of the front panel. Now you have to finish the lower part of the front panel. Start crocheting where you started the front panel, working upside down:
Row 1a Chain 1, 2 sc, 48 dc.
Row 2a Chain 1, 1 sc, 46 dc.
Row 3a Chain1, 1 sc, 44 dc.
Row 4a Chain1, 1 sc, 42 dc.
Back Panel
Work as front panel. At the top of the bag continue working for 3 more rows as row 8.
The half circle where the button is sewn onto is crocheted this way: Start working at the center of the top: The first row you chain 3 and work 13 double crochets into the same place. The second row you start with 3 chains and the work 2 double crochets into each of previous rows double crochets. Fasten the half circle to the main body, so it will felt evenly to the main body of the bag.
Darn in all ends with tapestry needle.
Handle
Chain 4
Row 1 Chain 3, 4 dc.
Repeat row 1 until work measures 45 cm/17 inches. (The handle is made a little longer than needed to be sure it is long enough).
Put the 3 pieces into the washing machine at 60 Celcius/140 Fahrenheit.
Sew the front panel together with the bottom panel with red sewing thread. Turn the bag inside out, so the seams will be hidden inside.
Sew the handle to the outside of the bag. That way you are still able to close the bag neatly. Sew button and snap button on the bag.
Abbreviations
dc = double crochet
sc = single crochet

I’m making this purse, love it, but am I suppose to decrease in each row on my own? I’m used to patterns that tell me where to decrease( I’m new to crocheting).
When I ch 1, do I sc in next stitch or do I skip a stitch? If I decease during the dc, does it matter where I do this?
Hi Angie,
You don’t skip a stitch, after the chain stitch.
You decrease by just not crocheting the last double crochets in the row and the you turn the work. Since the yarn felts a lot you will still get a neat edge doing it that way.
Normally you would decrease stitches by crocheting double crochets together, but I didn’t do that, because the yarn felts a lot.
Hope this helps:-)
