Aphrodite Wrap
Birgit Tüchsen
This is a free crochet pattern for a pretty wrap. It is made of 2 rectangles, – one for the main body and one for the center strip, that makes the wrap curl slightly in the middle.
It is a charted only pattern, so there are no row by row directions for it.
Materials
Yarn 2 skeins Colinette, Art in the shade Heavens Above. 79% wool, 21% bamboo, 100g/173 m-189 yards.
Hook 7 mm
Tapestry needle
Gauge
10 cm x 10 cm 4 inches x 4 inches = 15 stitches x 7 rows
Size
This is a size M wrap but shown on a size XS model. The width is 19 cm/7½ inches and 110cm/21½ inches in circumference. Make the strip longer or shorter, so it fits your size. Remember the yarn will stretch somehow with this lacy pattern!
Free Crochet Pattern
Crochet 28 chains. The wrap is now worked sideways.
Work the pattern as the stitchguide shows you below. The pattern repeats itself every 4th stitch, so you can make the wrap a little narrower or wider as you please. Crochet until your work is 110c m/21½ inches long for size M.
Sew the rectangle together, so it forms a tube.
Crochet a picot edging at the top and bottom of the tube. See chart below.
With a tapestry needle sew with big stitches along each side of the seam. Pull slightly so the wrap ruffles a little and make knots at the back side. See below.
Make the center strip: Crochet 48 chains. Crochet the center strip with the same stitch pattern as the wrap for 5½cm/2 inches. Place it over the previously made ruffles and sew it to the back of the wrap, so the seam gets invisible.
This yarn is just wonderful!!! The bamboo gives strength to the wool and adds some shining affect too, so it resembles a wool/silk blend.

Note: This pattern is written with US crochet terms.

This will be great for a prom night if it is raining or cooler here in the East.
Hi Laura,
Agree – the wrap could be made in a matching color for a dress. You can customize this pattern, so it fits any width :-)
Ooooh I really like this!
I simply love the diagrams of your patterns, its so much easy-er to read than written patterns. Thank you. Now intricate things become as easy as breathing.
Blessings June.

Thank you June:-) I am a visual crocheter and have a hard time following written only crochet patterns, so crochet charts are a must for me.
You say to chain 28, then in your pattern there is only 13 chains… What one is right? Should I chain 28 then work the pattern into it instead of into the 13? Are the 28 chains for the width of length? Thanks so much for the pattern! Sorry to ask so many questions.
Hi Swanwhite,
If you want to make the wrap as I did, you will start with 28 chains. The stitchguide shows only a part of the pattern. When you start with 28 chains the pattern has to be extended. You could make a swatch by crocheting the stitchguide pattern. Then you measure yourself and find out the desired length and width of the finisjhed wrap. Then you calculate how many chains you will need as foundation for the width of the wrap.
Sorry for the late answer – I just returned from a long Christmas vacation.
I love it!!! I was wondering though do you ch 3 then skip a dc and then dc then ch and so forth?
That is very pretty!
Thanks, Jackie :-)
Oooh! I adore this pattern and just have to make one for myself. So appreciate the chart, which has always been easier for me to read. This one is very easy and looks so lovely. Will probably make several as gifts. Thanks for presenting us with such a beauty!
You are welcome Rosebooboo :-) If you have any questions regarding the pattern feel free to leave a comment.
This very nice, I love it and I’m still running doing this.
Thanks so much.

Great you love it! If you have a blog, please send a comment, so I can see a picture :-)
I have never seen crochet like this b4,- interesting work of art.
A BEAUTIFUL wrap and a great tutorial! Thanks for sharing it and also for the print instructions you posted in an earlier reply to a comment.
You are welcome, Gloria.
Hi Carmen,
There is a print button at the bottom of the post. That way you can print a printfriendly copy:-)
I don’t want to read the comments and I only want the pattern. My printer isn’t equiped for all of the printning. Thanks Jane
Hi Jane,
At the end of the post, to the right of the Facebook and Twitter buttons, there is a print button.
When you click on it you get a view over the printable pages. Print 4 pages and you don’t have to print out all the comments:-)

Thank for the like post!
Hi Kenia,
The first row shown in red is worked from the right to the left.
The second row shown in black is worked from the left to the right: You start the second row with 3 chains, 1 double into last rows space, 1 chain, 1 double crochet into last rows space….and so on.
I hope this is the answer to your question.
Hi Kenia,
I will make a tutorial on my blog how to read crochet charts. Hopefully I will have it done over the next couple of days. I will send you a note here on my blog on the comments section, so you can see when it is up!
In the second row, you just turn and keep going with the pattern?
Yes, thank you. But I’m new at crocheting and I don´t know how to crochet from the left to the right. Any way you can explain it or a tutorial?
Thanks!!
Hi Kenia,
I put a tutorial on my blog, so you can see how you read a crochet chart:
http://number19.wordpress.com/2011/10/01/tutorial-how-to-read-a-crochet-chart-diagram/
Is this helpful for you?
new to crocheting, love the wrap, can’t understand the directions, is there a loom invovled or is it just single and double crochet?
I’m not new to crochet, but have never worked from a pattern like this. Love the wrap & want to make it. On the pattern, do you double crochet, then double again, chain, then double? Do you work in every stitch across? Thanks so much for your help.
Hi,
I have shown the crochet symbols for a pattern repeat for 13 beginning chains. But in the pattern you will actually make 28 chains in the beginning.
The pattern repeat goes like this:
Chain 13
Row 1: Chain 3, 1 double crochet 5th chain from hook, chain 1, 1double crochet into same stitch as previous double crochet, skip 1, 1 double crochet, skip 1, and so on…
European crochet patterns often don’t have lenghthy written instructions, but rely on crochet charts like the one I have used. Whereas US patterns mostly have row by row instructions. Right now I don’t have a tutorial on my blog which explains how to read a charted pattern. So I give you these links, that explain how you read charts:

Thank you so much for posting this! I now have a reason to pull out the victorian lace loom :D
Good luck with it! The hairband was my first ever hairpin lace project, so it is super easy.
I LOVE THE APHRODITE WRAP. I WILL MAKE IT MY GRIL WILL LOVE IT.
Hi Carmen,
Feel free to ask me, if you have any questions about the pattern.
Very pretty!
Thank you!
Hi,
This is a charted only pattern and not a row by row explained pattern. In my stitchguide you can read which crochet stitch each crochetsymbol represents. – And yes, it’s just single and double crochets. No loom is used for this pattern. If you are new to crochet charts try to look at this page with the most common ones:http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/chart_crochet.html
Thanks Teena:-)
Thanks Laura:-)
I hope you will find the time crocheting it for yourself or for someone in your family.
I LIKE THE PATTERN A LOT. I WILL TRAY TO MAKE IF I CAN PRINT IT.
THANK YOU FOR A BEAUTIFUL PATEN
Thanx, Olive!
